Injury

Because of this: http://smileynetpublicnews.blogspot.com/2018/05/injury-dennis-earl-smiley.html, things haven't been maintained as much for awhile and might not be as well maintained for now.

New ISP

We now have a new ISP. It is MetroPCS! It is a phone company. Things will operate differently under the new ISP, but they will operate. Our ISP was changed to make sure we were in terms of service that we knew about, while we continue to move forward.

New High Level Cloud Sharing Service

This says it all:

We now have vmain, mapping just about all the drives from everywhere, on folders. These are nicely arranged, and have their permissions nicely set according to what needs to be to keep people out, who don't belong. They are mapped there, and then reshared, via samba. So, you can map one drive, which maps them all. The reason we needed to do this, is mainly because of the NAS. It would only be something like 25 drive, if it weren't for that. With that, it's now around 50 drives (without actually counting). So you are getting a 50 in one savings!

Router Changes

You may have noticed, at any point yesterday, and this afternoon, that many of the network services were down. Actually, most of them were working still. It's just that you couldn't use them, because the routers were being worked on.

Airprint functionality needed to be enabled. Otherwise, the exact design was working perfect. The only way we could do this, and get this working okay, was to collapse the 192.168.2.0 subnet into 192.168.1.0. For now, the third subnet (and even 4th), are working with only minor changes. DNS still works as expected. The changes there are transperant.

We tested and came up with that as the solution. It also, no longer requires pre-registration of MACs in order to connect to the guest network. However, you will still need the password. Depending on what you are doing, you will also still need an AUP signed and on file.

This said it all.

First Pass of Winodws 10

The first pass of Windows 10 is being worked on. We really need to "gently obsess" over this one. That way we are basically experts on the current version of Windows 10, by the time we are done. But we do NOT need to redo it over and over until it's absolutely perfect, like I did when I was younger. I did not know all I know about how to do things right then. How to do things, and get work done, is that you do a little here and there, until you do have a perfect system.

Cloud Server Now Available

We now have a cloud server. We have media protocols enabled for network media. We also have file storage cloud services, that can be accessed with buffalo apps.

Each user who has NAS access, also has access through the cloud. Every user has a special "cloud" share, on which to store shared cloud data.

VPN Now Available

Now, we have a VPN to connect to.

SMILEYNET Store

We now have the SMILEYNET Store. This is a store, sort of like Google Play Store. This will store apps that we use on the network. For now, it's mainly android apps. In the spirit of things, there is an app for the store, as well, which can be downloaded from itself. Then, there are some other apps, which have been developed.

New Blog for Network Services

It's a small change to the website, but now we have a network service blog. This one is yet another way to report changes in the network services, such as outages.

Where We Are

We are making progress toward version a of the network! We are now at configuring the household computers, which will take some time. The Windows XP machine is first, as it's long past time to work out the "bugs" with that system. We are not phasing it out yet. We expect it to hang around for a long time to come at this time. It may not have security updates anymore, but it is still a pretty good system to use.
